For individuals already in the United States who qualify for a green card — adjustment of status lets you complete the process without leaving the country. We help applicants assemble a complete I-485 package and move confidently through every step.
Adjustment of Status (AOS) is the process that allows eligible foreign nationals already present in the United States to apply for lawful permanent residency — a green card — without having to return to their home country for consular processing. It is filed using Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status.
AOS is available to applicants who have a qualifying basis (family-based, employment-based, refugee or asylee status, and several other categories), who are physically present in the U.S., and who meet the admissibility requirements. The advantages are significant: applicants can remain in the country throughout processing, apply for a work permit (EAD) and advance parole for travel, and in many cases file concurrently with the underlying petition.
"Adjustment of status is a milestone moment — what matters is arriving at it with a complete, clean, and well-organized file."
Understanding how the I-485 interacts with the underlying petition and supporting applications is central to a smooth, predictable case.
The core application that requests adjustment to lawful permanent resident status. Requires supporting civil documents, a medical exam, and biometrics appointment.
In many family and employment categories where a visa is immediately available, the underlying petition (I-130 or I-140) can be filed together with the I-485 — saving significant time.
While the I-485 is pending, applicants can apply for an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-765) and Advance Parole (Form I-131) to work and travel internationally.
Adjustment of status has specific eligibility and admissibility requirements. Every I-485 case needs to satisfy the following core conditions.
The applicant must be physically present in the United States at the time of filing Form I-485.
An approved or simultaneously filed I-130 (family), I-140 (employment), or other qualifying immigrant petition.
An immigrant visa must be available per the Department of State Visa Bulletin at the time of filing.
Most applicants must have been inspected and admitted or paroled into the United States at entry.
Employment-based and certain other applicants must generally have maintained lawful status throughout their stay.
No disqualifying grounds of inadmissibility — including certain criminal, immigration, or health issues.
A sealed medical examination completed by a USCIS-designated civil surgeon.
Form I-864 showing adequate financial support for family-based and certain other categories.
From strategy to submission, every adjustment case we support follows the same structured, rigorous framework.
Start Your CaseWe confirm your underlying category, check visa availability, and review your immigration history to determine whether AOS is the strongest route — or whether consular processing fits better.
We build a full checklist: civil documents, translations, I-94 history, tax records, proof of lawful status, and all supporting exhibits for the I-485 package.
We prepare every form — I-485, I-130 or I-140, I-864, I-765, I-131, I-693 — and structure the package so each form, exhibit, and supporting letter lines up cleanly.
We coordinate filing, track biometrics and interview scheduling, prepare you for the interview, and stay with the case through any RFE and final approval.
